Our Story

Apona Vineyards embodies the harmonious relationship between nature and craft. Founded by Afton and Andrew on 100 acres of woodland, farmland, and a working horse barn, Apona honors the land’s equine heritage and its abundance. Inspired by the ancient goddess Epona, symbolizing horses and harvest, the winery blends tradition with innovation. Here, tradition and craftsmanship meet to produce wines that tell a story with every sip, inviting guests to experience not only the beauty of the land but the dedication and artistry that go into every bottle. Apona Winery is a place where every visit and sip contributes to the story.
Our Vineyard
Our vineyard spans 34 acres of meticulously tended vines, thriving in the rich, fertile Veneta loam soil. This vibrant, live-certified vineyard is a true labor of love, carefully cultivated to produce exceptional wines. With eight distinct vineyard blocks, we proudly grow 11 varietals, each offering its own unique expression of the land.
The vines themselves seem to wrap around our tasting room, inviting guests to relax and take in the serene beauty of the surrounding area. From the tasting room, visitors can gaze out over the back patio pond, reflecting the vineyard and surrounding forest. The tranquil setting is the perfect backdrop for savoring our wines and connecting with nature.
In addition to the vines, our property includes a 6-stall horse barn, home to three quarter horses and one draft cross. They roam in a nearby pasture that can be seen from the tasting room.
Whether you’re here for a wine tasting or simply to enjoy the peaceful surroundings, our vineyard offers a unique and unforgettable experience, showcasing the best of both viticulture and rural life.
Terroir & Climate

Located in the southern Willamette Valley, our vineyard benefits from a distinctive terroir shaped by ancient marine sedimentary soils. These well-draining soils, rich in mineral complexity, create ideal conditions for vines to develop deep root systems, producing wines with depth and elegance.
The climate here is a blend of cool maritime influences and the moderate temperatures of the Pacific Northwest, offering long growing seasons with warm summer days and cool evenings. This diurnal shift preserves acidity while allowing for slow, even ripening—enhancing the complexity and structure of our wines. While the coastal breezes from the nearby Coastal Range help moderate temperatures across the valley, the conditions in Veneta tend to be slightly warmer, allowing for a unique expression of the region’s character. These conditions, combined with sustainable vineyard practices, enable us to craft wines that embody the elegance, vibrancy, and authenticity of the southern Willamette Valley.

Andrew Head
Founder
Andrew Head is a successful entrepreneur with 30 years of business experience in the construction industry. Over the course of his tenure as CEO of Head’s Roofing he has proven his business acumen by thousands of satisfied and repeat customers who continue to refer Heads Roofing to others.
His deep knowledge of both running a business and construction make him extremely qualified to run a beautifully developed 100 acre property designed specifically to create high end bespoke experiences in both wine and events.
Andy and Afton have spent the better part of 6 years dreaming and building the winery from the ground up at their property in Veneta, Oregon. The vines are now 5 years old and with 2 harvests under their belt already. The wine tasting room will be in the old blue horse barn, which is located in the heart of the property. Apona, is a word play off the word “Epona” which is the Celtic/Roman goddess of the horse. That same sense of grandeur, tradition, artistry can be applied to this brand. A balance of both history and tradition with modernity and warmth should be explored.

Chris Graves
Winemaker
Born and raised in California’s vine-covered Sierra Foothills, Graves developed an early fascination with winemaking. By age 16, he knew it would be his career. A 2004 graduate of the UC Davis Viticulture & Enology program, Graves began his professional career at Wente Vineyards in Livermore, CA, serving first as an enologist and then as assistant winemaker. He became winemaker for Wente’s Cal-Ital brand, Tamás Estates Winery, where he took charge of all wines and began blending and designing new styles. Graves was also involved at every step in the marketing process and helped build a successful brand.
In 2007 Graves left to start a boutique brand called Ruby Hill Winery. Under his leadership as head winemaker, the company saw double-digit growth for years and cultivated an extremely successful wine club. This spurred Graves and his partners to launch a second brand in 2013, Rubino Estates Winery, also focused on Cal-Ital style wines.
Lured by the rapid growth of Southern Oregon’s wine industry, Graves and his family relocated to beautiful Jacksonville, Ore., in 2014. He worked as a consulting winemaker before joining Naumes Crush and Fermentation in 2015 and he continues to consult for many brands in Oregon and California. Graves teaches wine courses at Southern Oregon University and Umpqua Community College’s Southern Oregon Wine Institute and he serves on the Oregon Wine Board’s Research Committee.
Graves has worked with many grape varietals from a wide range of appellations. He specializes in high-tech, low-impact processing that produces ideal wine balance. Among his many awards is Best of Show/ White for the TRIUM 2018 Viognier at the 2019 Oregon Wine Experience. In addition to multiple competitive medals, Graves has earned numerous 90+ scores from leading publications such as Wine Enthusiast, Wine Advocate, Decanter and others.
